What is Rails?

Ruby on Rails is the original convention-over-configuration web framework, still one of the fastest ways to get a complete application built.

Why you would run it

It suits small teams who need to ship a full product rather than a service. Everything from the database layer to background jobs comes from the same well-worn playbook.

Why run it in Rwanda

Because the alternative is a server in another country answering to another country's courts. Running Rails in the Kigali or Huye region keeps the data on Rwandan infrastructure, under Rwandan law, invoiced in Rwandan francs and payable by mobile money. Your users in Rwanda reach it over a local path instead of a round trip to Europe, and the second region is 2.2 ms away for replicas and backups. Close enough to replicate against, far enough apart to survive an incident.

How to get started

  1. Open the console. Sign in at platform.gewape.cloud. New accounts can be created there.
  2. Pick the region. Kigali or Huye. Both run the same platform, so the choice is about where you want the data and which one is your second copy.
  3. Choose Rails and a plan. Start at g1.medium; you can resize later without rebuilding.
  4. Launch it. The server builds and configures itself, then hands you the admin URL and credentials , usually within 90 seconds.

Questions

Can I run Rails on a server in Rwanda?

Yes. It deploys into the Kigali or Huye region on hardware we own, and the data stays in the country. The smallest plan that runs it comfortably is g1.medium, 2 vCPU, 4 GB.

How much does it cost?

You pay for the server, not the software. Rails starts from RWF 79,500 a month on g1.medium, invoiced in Rwandan francs with no egress fees. Larger plans are available and you can resize without rebuilding.

How long does it take to be running?

Typically 90 seconds from launching it to receiving the admin URL and credentials. No ticket, no provisioning queue.

Do I get root access?

Yes. It is your server. You get full root access, your own firewall rules, and the ability to install anything else alongside it.

Run Rails where your users are.

Deploy it into the Kigali or Huye region in minutes, or talk to an engineer who runs the regions if the workload is regulated.
